FCPXML Subtitle Converter: The Complete Guide

What is FCPXML?

FCPXML (Final Cut Pro XML) is Apple's XML-based project interchange format. It allows you to transfer timelines, clips, and — most importantly for us — subtitles between Final Cut Pro, DaVVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro, and Avid Media Composer.

Unlike SRT (which is plain text with timestamps), FCPXML preserves rich information: subtitle styles, effects (like "Upper Thirds" templates), colors, fonts, positions, and timing relative to your timeline.

Why Convert Subtitles to FCPXML?

The most common use case: you've finished editing a project in one tool (e.g., Premiere Pro) and need to import it into Final Cut Pro. Premiere exports SRT subtitles, but FCPX won't read SRT directly — it needs FCPXML.

How to Use the FCPXML Converter

1. Open the FCPXML Converter
2. Drag your subtitle file (or .fcpxmld bundle) onto the dropzone
3. The tool auto-detects the format and shows your cues
4. Choose the output format (e.g., FCPXML)
5. Adjust settings: fps (23.976 / 24 / 25 / 29.97 / 30), orientation (Landscape 16:9 / Portrait 9:16), font, color
6. Click Convert now and download the .fcpxml file
7. In Final Cut Pro: File → Import → XML → select your file

Special Cases

.fcpxmld Bundles (macOS)

Final Cut Pro saves some projects as .fcpxmld — a folder containing Info.fcpxml and metadata. Because this is a directory, you have two options:

• Drag the folder onto the dropzone — the converter reads Info.fcpxml automatically
• Right-click the folder → "Compress" to create a .zip, then upload that

DaVinci Resolve .drt Files

DaVinci Resolve exports timelines as .drt files (ZIP archives). Our converter extracts them and reads the <SubtitleTrackVec> data. Note: .drt files usually contain subtitle track metadata (name, duration, timing) but not the actual subtitle text. To get text out of DaVinci, use Deliver page → Subtitles → Export Sidecar → SubRip (.srt).

Premiere Pro Exports

Premiere Pro can export subtitles as .csv or .txt directly from the Captions panel. Our converter handles both formats.

FCPXML v1.14 vs v1.11

If you export FCPXML manually (e.g., from FCPX 11), make sure you're using v1.14, not v1.11. v1.11 lacks the <effect uid> attribute and uses different <asset-clip> elements, which causes FCPX to throw "DTD validation failed" errors. Our converter always outputs v1.14 with proper structure.

Troubleshooting

• "Loaded 0 cues" — The file isn't a recognized subtitle format. Try opening it in a text editor — if you see numbers like 1 then 00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:03,500, it's SRT.
• "All timecodes are 00:00:00.000" — You're using the wrong fps. DaVinci exports often use 24 fps with 1-hour offsets; switch to 24 and use the DaVinci → 0 button to normalize.
• "DTD validation failed" in FCPX — The XML uses an old format. Re-export using our converter for v1.14 compliance.
